in this book by Dr. Wilfred Martin, MUN, Faculty of
Education. Dr. Martin is also the co-author of two text
books, and three books about communities and people of
Random Island, Newfoundland.

About the Author
Wilfred B. W. Martin was born in Hickman's Harbour,
Newfoundland and received his schooling at Hickman's
Harbour, Shoal Harbour and Clarenville. He taught school
at Pound Cove, Burgeo and Mount Pearl. He received
degrees from Memorial University of Newfoundland (B.A.,
M.A.- Sociology, and B.Ed) and York University (Ph.D.-
Sociology).
Prior to joining Memorial University's Faculty of Education
as a Professor in the Department of Educational
Foundations, Dr. Martin spent seven years with the
Department of Sociology at the University of New
Brunswick. While at the University of New Brunswick, he
received the University's Excellence in Teaching Award
(1977).
Professor Martin has written extensively in both Sociology
and Education and his writings have appeared in many
national and international journals. In addition he has
published three books relating to the history of Random
Island.
