Book Description
This book is a collection essays written by various Newfoundland authors in honour of one of North Americas leading folklorists, Herbert Halpert.
Born on August 23, 1911 in Manhattan, New York, Halpert was the oldest of three children, the only son of a public accountant. His parents, Hungarian immigrants, valued education; his mother was from a family of school teachers and his father had studied English literature at a German university. Herbert began his education in a public school on Fast 78th Street in Manhattan. When the family moved to the Bronx, he continued his studies in Manhattan, commuting by subway to DeWitt Clinton High School on West 59th Street, which he attended from 1923 to 1929.
In recent years, he has actively supported the development of a national folklore society in Canada. This support was recognized at the founding meeting of the Folklore Studies Association of Canada in Quebec City in June, 1976, where he was proclaimed Honorary President of the Association.
At the end of August, 1979, Halpert retired as Henrietta Harvey Professor of Folklore at Memorial, becoming professor Emeritus.
