Commemorating the Entry of Newfoundland into Confederation in 1949 When Newfoundland entered the Canadian Confederation in 1949 a special Silver Dollar depicting the ship the Matthew was issued. The Matthew was the ship of John Cabot, who discovered Newfoundland in 1497. Below the ship is the phrase "Floreat, Terra Nova." On the reverse is the image of George VI Encapsulated coin in a lined box. |
