Information
Butter and Snow Productions announces the release of a remarkable compilation of folk
songs: "Our Labrador". This CD/casseffe features performances by some of Labrador's
finest artists including Harry Martin (Cartwright), Margaret Metcalfe (14ain), Gerald
Mitchell (MaickoviIc/Rappy Valley), Greg Penashue (Sheshatshit), Shirley Montague
Qlorth West River), and Dick Gardiner (Labrador City),
Labrador's culture is rich in music which reflects on a quickly disappearing traditional
lifestyle Many of the songs presented on this recording are related to that way of life - a
life in which Sefflers, Innu and Inuk, all relied heavily on this land as a means of
subsistence. The compilation contains songs sung in the three languages of Labraor:
English, Inuktitut, and Innu-Aimun.
Our Labrador introduces the listener to the cultural diversity of the "Big Land', while
portraying the love and respect the people of Labrador have for their heritage. "Old
Mokami", "Shanty Town", "Pearl River", and "Labrador Rose", are each anthems to the
beauty and expressions of profound love of Labrador. The "The Grand River Song",
"Take Me To The Country", "We Sons Of Labrador" and "Nantem Minautaman",
illustrate the significance of the traditional lifestyle. Also included in this eclectic
mixture are two lnnuktitut songs that were originally introduced to Northern Labrador by
the Moravian Missionaries in the 1700's. Though each song has a special beauty, perhaps
the missionary Sir Wilfred Grenfell, who originally wrote this piece to the tune of "0
Tannenbaum". It is recorded on this compilation with a new melody wriffen by Shirley
Montague and includes vocal performances from the featured artists in all three
languages.
Our Labrador was recorded at Studio F, CBC Radio, St. John's by engineer, Terry
Winsor, and music producer, Glen Tilley. Supporting musicians include some of the
province's finest talents: Dave Panting, Roger Howse, Kathy Phippard, Kelly Russell,
Cornelius (Frank) Maher, Christine Smith, Fergus O'Byrne, Brian Kenny, Wade Pinhorn,
Rick Holleff, and John Lacey.
Our Labrador was conceived several years ago by co-ordinating producer, Shirley
Montague, who saw the need to compile a recording of Labrador folk music featuring a
variety of performers. This is only a taste of what Labrador has to offer musically; the
voices of these talented artists bring a small part of Labrador to the rest of the world.
This album is dedicated to Byron Chaulk. As one of Labrador's most revered
songwriters, he touched the hearts of many with his ability to express his love of the land in song.
