Newfoundland Symphony Youth Choir

Founded by Susan Knight in 1992, the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Choir (NSYC) is an auditioned ensemble of 95 singers aged 11-18. The NSYC mandate is to provide choral music education to gifted young Newfoundlanders, to connect the province with the rest of the artistic world through choral excellence, and to preserve and transmit the province's rich folk song heritage. About the Artist...
Newfoundland Symphony Youth Choir (NSYC) is a community-based cultural organization supported by a six member Board of Directors and an Honourary Advisory Board. It includes 187 young artists between the ages of 8 and 18 from the St. John's urban region, Newfoundland, Canada. At the heart of the NSYC vision is the valuing, promoting and transmitting of Newfoundland and Labrador's distinctive and rich folksong culture. The senior choir (Newfoundland Symphony Youth Choir) is a group of 111 choristers founded in 1992. The NSYC performs as a unit and also has within it two independent choirs, Jubilate and Camerata. Jubilate, whose average age is 13, represents the younger members of the Youth Choir; it has 51 members and tours provincially. Camerata, whose average age is 15, has 60 members and tours nationally and internationally. In 1993, the organization expanded to offer a preparatory choral experience to a 81 member Children's Chorus.

In this short time, these young people have attained a remarkable level of professionalism, and have been highly acclaimed by both national and international audiences. The NSYC has developed an excellence in the interpretation and performance of a wide range of choral work from around the world, especially works celebrating the musical and cultural heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.
