Ed Snook

Ed Snook remembers as a boy in Sunnyside going into the woods with his uncle, and riding on the rear sled, which was jolted along as the horse trotted on the rough woods path.

The beloved Newfoundland Pony is an officially recognized part of our heritage, protected under the Heritage Animals Act of 1996.

One of a horse's most important roles in the outports, in years past, was in hauling of firewood in the wintertime, usually pulling two sleds in tandem, attached to each other by crossed chains.

In this image, he imagined an outport scene with a fisherman and his trusty Newfoundland Pony returning home, in a December twilight, with a load of firewood and a Christmas tree.

Ed Snook is a retired structural engineer who resides in St. John's. A life-long self-taught artist, Ed enjoys landscape and portrait painting in both watercolour and acrylic. In 2002 he was awarded the Realist Artist of Newfoundland and Labrador Award of Excellence.

Born in Sunnyside, Trinity Bay, where he spent his early boyhood years, Ed then moved to St. John's where he later received a BSc degree from the old Memorial University of Newfoundland. He then went on to graduate from Nova Scotia Technical College with a degree in Civil Engineering.

He devotes much of his time to painting and enjoying his three grandchildren, Jake, Stephanie, and Leigha. He and his wife Gail spend part of their time at their summer home in New Perlican where the beautiful scenery inspires his work.
