The Berries
Bakeapple
(Cloudberry)(Rubus chamaemorus). This berry is internationally known
as a 'cloudberry' and is similar in appearance to a rather large raspberry,
however, the color is orange/yellow and grows one berry to a plant approximately
3-4" high. These plants are found in northern peat bogs. These berries are extremely rich in vitamin C and contain few calories. The juice has been used to treat hives.
Partridgeberry
(Vaccinium vitis idaea). Internationally known as the lingonberry
this relative of the cranberry family is a low mat forming shrub which grows
in somewhat higher and drier northern areas. Tart in flavour they are high in vitamin C, tannin, anthocyanin, and antioxidants. These agents are attributed to the prevention of high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, cardiovascular disease, cataracts, slowing such aging processes as memory loss and the deterioration of motor skill, improving circulation, as well as the prevention of certain forms of cancer.
