The following description of the Atlantic puffin is sized to fit on the back of the completed piece.
The Atlantic puffin is the provincial bird for Newfoundland and a member of the auk family. The population at the Ecological Reserve Witless Bay, NF (35 km south of St John's) is the largest in the western Atlantic. The Atlantic puffin is stocky, 12 in long (30 cm), with a serious owl-like face, vivid, orange-red feet and legs, and a diminutive tail. The bill is large and multicoloured, more suited to the tropical jungle, hence the other common name for the puffin - sea parrot. The puffin uses its bill to catch and stack cross-wise several small fish at the same time. The puffin's wings make flight almost impossible. She can be seen swooping from high cliffs, like a meteor and turning upward just before hitting the water. Her landing is dependent on the force and direction of the wind, if either fail the puffin will crash. Other puffins get out of way of incoming birds and congratulate each other when the flying bird is safe on 'terra firma'. The puffin is a more accomplished swimmer as she uses her wings and webbed feet to speed through schools of fish. Back on land she has a comical gait as she clambers over rocks and jumps using those wings to propel her. The puffin nests in colonies on coastal islands in burrows dug in shallow turf with her webbed feet. The female lays a single egg. The young 'puffling' is fed by both parents.
