Newfoundland holds a unique place in the annals of Canadian
broadcasting; it has two radio stations owned and operated
by religious denominations. The unusual situation exists due to
their already being in operation at the time of Newfoundland's
confederation with Canada in 1949. Along with being the first
radio station in Newfoundland, with its initial broadcasting
beginning in July of 1942, VOWR operates entirely with
volunteer labour. Although owned by the United Church, the
station caters a multi-religious audience and has a wide base
of secular as well as religious programming, drawing its
volunteers from a variety of backgrounds: ministers,
laypeople, priests and agnostics. It is one of the few
institutions in Canada which has a waiting list for its volunteer
positions. This book tells of the trials and tribulations of
establishing and operating this radio station, and, in its
seventy-fifth anniversary year, provides and interesting insight
into the growth of broadcasting.
