Book Description
Term 17 of 1949 Terms of Union between Newfoundland and Canada provided constitutional protection for denominational education in the province.
In the fall of 1995, using the results of a highly divisive referendum, Premier Clyde Wells tables in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly a resolution to amend Term 17. It would take another five years, a change of political administration, a second referendum, yet another amendment to Term 17, and a series of legal battles to bring the issue of educational change to its conclusion. That change ended the province's denominationally based education system and replaced it with a common system.
"Trial" documents the position taken by the Catholic Education Council/Committee throughout this process and its unsuccessful attempt to preserve the constitutional rights in education of Roman Catholics in Newfoundland and Labrador. 248 pages
