Book Description Salt Fish and Shmattes is a lively new history that draws on folklore, song and previously undiscovered documents to trace Jewish settlement in Newfoundland and Labrador. From the Devon merchants of the eighteenth century to the Holocaust survivors of World War Two, Jewish settlers chose to make the Rock their home; Salt Fish and Shmattes tells their stories. About the Author Dr. Robin McGrath is a movelist and poet, a well-known folk historian, and the archivist for the Hebrew Congregation of Newfoundland and Labrador. In 1999, she won the Henry Fuerstenberg Poetry Prize, one of the Canadian Jewish Book Awards, and in 2004 she received the Geldert Medal for her work on Simon Solomon, Newfoundland's first postmaster.
