    Book Description
The Story of St. John's is an epic drama, featuring stoic fishermen, intrepid aviators, brilliant statesmen, devoted clerics, hard-working business people and brave social reformers. The tale also includes rapacious merchants, destructive fires, shameless politicians, religious bigots, and warriors.

In his meticulously researched book, Paul O'Neill illustrates the people and events that have made St. John's a truly unique city on the North American landscape.

The Oldest City brings together the many pieces which comprise the history of St. John's; its pioneers, larger-than-life characters, and the hard working people who built the foundations of the city's economy and culture.

"For me, this northern city is the last point on the island of America - the end of land; the end of day."

    About the Author
Paul O'Neill was a professional actor in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada before working as a producer with CBC Radio and TV for nearly 35 years. He is the author of ten books, including two volumes of poetry. Among his many awards are more than a dozen prizes in the Newfoundland Arts & Letters Competition, and the Canadian Historical Association Prize. The first edition of The Oldest City won him the Legend Award, presented by St. John's Municipal Council for "a significant contribution in promoting the culture and heritage of the city." Other honours include the degree Doctors of Laws from Memorial University and induction into the Order of Canada. His prose and poetry have been published in Canada, the United States, England, Scotland and Ireland.

"The standard history of St. John's is a monumental work by Paul O'Neill. One might expect such a labour of municipal devotion to be heavy going; in fact, it is one of the most consistently entertaining history books I have ever read, full of excellent stories, gamy characters and surprising historical allusions."
