The Newfoundland Coyote by Darrin McGrath is the true story of the arrival and spread of the eastern coyote ( Canis latrans) on the island of Newfoundland. In March 1985, there was a report of three wolf-like dogs coming ashore from the sea-ice near Marches Point on the Port-au-Port Peninsula. In the almost 20 years since that time, coyotes have spread across the length and breadth of the island. The coyote is proving to be an effective predator on caribou and domestic sheep and both species are suffering as a result. Coyote sightings are becoming more common and some people have had very close encounters with them.
