Book Description Publisher's Note The subject of this study of musical creativity in the oral tradition is Emile Benoit (1913-1992), an exemplary traditional fiddler from French Newfoundland. Music from the Heart follows Benoit through a rapidly changing musical milieu as he moves from a small rural community to international musical and folk festivals. Emile Benoit was the preeminent dance musician to Newfoundland's Port-au-Port Peninsula, a role he maintained until the early 1960s, when local musical tastes began to change under the influence of mainstream North American culture. In the late 1960s and early 1970s a movement for Newfoundland cultural revival provided new opportunities for his musical expression, and Benoit once again found himself the preeminent performer in what then became a musical community of international scope. Seeing himself as a representative of French Newfoundland, Benoit viewed his music as an expression of that identity. In Benoit's tunes one finds reference to the people, places, communities, roads, and natural landmarks that have framed his life. The compositions included in Music from the Heart represent a range of work that evokes his youthful experiences and that follows his career as he leaves home, meets people, plays with other musicians, and presents his stories to audiences around the world. Music from the Hear contains selected compositions of Emile Benoit including, Devil among the tailors, Candlemas Day Set, The Old Man and Women Tunes, Gravel Pond Reel, Les Sabots, Brothers Jig, Lightkeepers Jig, Lover`s Reel, Happiness Reel, David`s Reel, Arriving to St. John`s, Emile`s Dream, Wedding Waltz and more (over 50 pages of music) | |
