Book Description Writing with remarkable openness and passion, T.A. Loeffler recounts her powerful story of preparing for, and attempting to scale, the mighty summit of Mount Everest. With gripping descriptions and spectacular photos, she invites readers into the extreme world of high-altitude climbing. More than a Mountain is also a deeply moving account of how one woman overcame adversity to reach out to young people and show them the power of big dreams and big goals. We follow her intimate and inspiring narrative as she explores her own evolution as a mountaineer and as a practising Buddhist. The result is a candid look at places where most of us only dream to tread. About the Author TA Loeffler Ph.D. is a unique combination of outdoor adventurer, author, filmmaker, photographer, educator, and motivational speaker, bringing a diversity of experience and expertise to everything she does. Her work and adventures have taken her to 35 different countries and five different continents. TA brings 20 years of expertise leading people through significant life-changing experiences to every facet of her work. As an author, her accessible writing leaps off the page and into the reader’s heart using metaphor and humour. As a professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, TA has developed a reputation for excellence in experiential education because her students are more likely to be outside chasing icebergs or following compass bearings than sitting in a classroom. As an motivational speaker, her presentations overflow with passion for adventures of the body, mind, heart, and spirit. TA is attempting the climb the “Seven Summits,” the highest peak on each of the seven continents. During her training for Mount Everest, TA spread her message of “Big Dreams, Big Goals” to over 12,000 youth in Newfoundand and Labrador. TA believes that we all long for a balanced, engaged, and creative life that challenges us to be the best we can possibly be. She models this belief in her life on a daily basis and invites readers and listeners to create the life they truly want. With compassion, care, presence, and playfulness, TA creates a safe space for all to learn, grow, and heal within. She uses her vast collection of outdoor adventures to create metaphors that provide new ways to see and transform the inevitable obstacles of life. TA inspires hope, possibility, and vision in those whose lives she touches. TA has received international and national recognition for her innovative teaching and motivational speaking. In 2006, The Globe and Mail named TA, “A Class Act” and she received the Association of Atlantic Universities Distinguished Teaching Award. The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport named TA to their 2006 Top Twenty Most Influential Women in Canadian Sport and Physical Activity List. Additionally, TA received the Memorial University Presidents Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2005 and the Association for Experiential Education presented named TA, the Outstanding Experiential Teacher of the Year in 1999. | |
