David Carr has had a difficult youth. Passed from one foster home to another, he turns to crime as an escape. After a number of run-ins with the law, David is placed on probation. Then one day a senseless crime ends in tragedy and turns him into a fugitive.
David evades the law and turns to a tough bu satisfying way of life with Silas, an old fisherman in a small, isolated Newfoundland community. With a beautiful young girl named Jeanie, he finds love and happiness as well.
For the first time since the death of his parents, David has a close relationship and discovers a new sense of purpose and pride. But a horrifying event will threaten his newfound happiness. While he and Silas are investigating a signal from a mysterious ship, his future is threatened as his past is revealed. David proves his courage - only to find that his freedom has a price tag.
About the Author
Mike McCarthy was born in St. Jacques, Fortune Bay and moved to Terrenceville at the age of five. A retired teacher and librarian, he attended Memorial University and the University of Ottawa, graduationg with a Master of Arts degree in Literature. He has written for magazines, newspapers, radio and television; is the author of many non-fiction books on Newfoundland.
