Williams was a native of Bristol who also had an association with Newfoundland through teaching and research in the Department of Geography at Memorial University. W. Gordon Handcock is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Geography, Memorial University. His research interests include the Lester Diaries 1751–1802 and settlement geography-origins and development and is author of Soe Long as There Comes no Women: English Migration and Settlement in Newfoundland Chesley W. Sanger is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Geography, Memorial University. His research interests include historical geography and marine resources, and Newfoundland shore-based whaling.
