Ben Hansen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and immigrated to Canada in 1953. He married Joyce (Reed) in 1956, and they have four sons and four daughters. He came to Memorial University in 1968, and retired as Manager of Photographic Services in 1988.

In 1981, he became Maritime Professional Photographer of the year, and in 1990, he was awarded the title of Master of Photographic Arts.

In 1993, he was presented with the Confederation125 medal by the Government of Canada.
