This is a novel of one mans quixotic mission to save the Beothuk of Newfoundland from extinction,
his love for Shawnadithit, and the tragedy of her life and the lives of her people. Based on true
accounts, the novel is told in the alternating first-person narratives of William Epps Cormack, an
eccentric Newfoundland-born Scottish merchant, and Shawnadithit, a young Beothuk woman
captured by English settlers in 1823 who proved to be the last Beothuk.
About the Author Annamarie Beckel lives in northern Wisconsin with her husband and two daughters. She works as
an editor/writer for the Abinoojiiyag (Youth) Center on the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Indian
Reservation. Previously, she was a technical writer for the University of Wisconsin. With a Ph.D in
ecology and animal behavior, Beckel has published scientific articles and a non-fiction book,
Breaking New Waters: A Century of Limnology at the University of Wisconsin. She became
fascinated with the story of William Cormack and Shawnadithit on her first visit to Newfoundland in
1976. All Gone Widdun is her first novel.
